January 2023 - Tigerlily - George Street, Edinburgh

Updated: Jan 29, 2023

Walking up the steps into Tigerlily, the flower wall and neon signs give you a taste of what is to come. Tigerlily got a re-vamp in 2022 and it is amazing! As you enter, you start with the front bar where most of the bar seating is cleverly partitioned off so you get a glimpse of the gorgeous bar area as you walk through to the dinning section but in no way do you feel you are having to wade through a bar!

The dinning area is in the middle and back of Tigerlily and it is easy to see how it transitions from a lovely dinner spot to a dance the night away spot depending on when you are there! The new semi-circle booths are great - a perfect size for 2 and feel more private than just rows of tables. A perfect date night spot!

Finally, I was there mid-week and I really noticed the atmosphere - there was a social buzz around the place. It didn't feel too loud or busy but there was a constant buzz of people eating and drinking and just enjoying catching up.

The Food

So after debating the menu we settled on the Serrano Ham and Manchego Croquetas and the Twice baked Mull of Kintyre Souffle followed by the Perthshire Venison Haunch and the Chicken Thai Green Curry for mains.

The souffle arrived and the waiter grated a generous amount of aged Gouda over the top which melted down into the tasty cream sauce which was great - who doesn't like extra cheese. Next I had the Venison which had a blushing haunch and a venison cottage pie to accompany it. Both were delicious but maybe slightly heavy for me - I personally might have preferred some more veg instead! The Thai Green Curry was also a winner with a generous portion and very flavourful.

Unfortunately we were so full after starters and mains there was absolutely no room for a dessert!

The AF Alternatives

Tigerlily excelled in catering for my alcohol free requests, I asked the waitress if there were any mocktails they could make me and she said to tell them what cocktail I would like and they would see if they could make a mocktail version. I decided on an AF Pornstar Martini and my friend had an AF Mojito which both looked and tasted the part!

On the menu, a few of their speciality cocktails such as the "Crimson Flamingo" and "Wee Beauty" have AF alternatives using Caleno AF spirits as a substitute. If mocktails are not your thing, dont worry, they also have AF Brewdog IPA, Peroni and Days lager and Pale ale on the menu.

I am really impressed that Tigerlily has such an offering and are really helping to normalise being alcohol free when out in town. I wouldn't feel out of place spending the evening here drinking mocktails, and sometimes that can be hard to find.

My only one suggestion would be it would be good if they could include a mocktail list on their drinks menu - if I had not asked I would not have known how AF friendly they were and maybe having them on the drinks list would make people a little less worried about having to ask for an alcohol free alternative.

Final Thoughts

Tigerlily is a statement restaurant - its perfect for impressing someone or a special occasion.

The evening menu prices range from around £9 for a starter / small plate and up to around £17 - £25 for a main which can make it a little pricey for a mid week catch up. However the good news is I noticed in February they are doing a weeknight 2-4-1 deal which I think is great value and makes very reasonable for a mid-week catch up.

I would definitely recommend Tigerlily for a great dinner, a wild night out at the weekend or just somewhere to pop in for a great AF cocktail.
